All work is done on MDF panels which are 6″ x 6″ and have a key hole on the back for easy hanging. Each piece is $66, making this an excellent opportunity to purchase original work by local artists. This year’s exhibit will also include works available from past years in honor of our 10th anniversary. I’ll have 4 2011 pieces as well as 8 or 9 from prior years. Here’s a sneak peek at my 2011 pieces.

Rochester NH -

Maine native Rhonda Mann will be showcasing some of her recent abstractions at the Ben Franklin Gallery in Rochester, NH. There will be an opening reception opening on Sunday, November 6, from 2-4 .

Rhonda’s work features abstract figures and shapes with sinuous movement and connectivity. There are often complex raw textures incorporated within the forms and background, making the paintings appear to subtly hum with an internal energy. The forms sometimes are interconnected through oddly articulated linkages, creating an otherworldly feel. Sometimes the overall effect is rather like staring into the mind’s eye of an alien visitor. At other times her work is reminsicent of the surrealist paintings and frottages of Max Ernst, but abstracted into a thoroughly contemporary and individual statement.

Some of Rhonda’s work can be previewed on her blog “Mindscapes”, here.

Boston has a spectacular new location for abstract and contemporary 2-D art. The Blue Glass cafe is a bright modern counter-service cafe in the Lobby of the Hancock Tower in Copley Square, Boston. The cafe has embarked upon a “Local Artist Project”, showcasing the work of a number of artists in the cafe’s mezzanine seating area. The summer artist show, their first, was a solid success.

The current show at the Blue Glass will run through early winter, and the exhibit is already building early excitement. More than 10 local artists have work on display, in a variety of styles ranging from pure abstract painting to mixed media and even some contemporary realism.

There are no fewer than 3 artists from the Abstract Artists group of New England featured as well. John Maciejowski (Melrose, MA) brings a depth of art experience and a subtle painterly vision to his abstract work, while Joshua Marcus (Newburyport, MA) creates explosions of playful energy. Local abstract artist Regina Valluzzi (Arlington MA) aka “The Nerdly Painter”, is a painting physicist whose work often alludes to concepts and phenomena from her years of scientific research.

All three of these artists plus several more can be seen now and through the winter season at the Blue Glass Cafe. Open House Reception, Wednesday, November 16th, 4:30 – 6:30 PM in the cafe. Refreshments will be served.

Press Release follows:

The “Early Winter ‘11 Exhibition” at The Gallery at 100 Market will feature biomorphic abstract expressionism to photo-realism, and a painting by a renowned sculpture and stills from music video. It includes professional who have practiced for decades on the seacoast exhibiting alongside emerging artists.

“Early Winter 11” opens October 28 with an artists’ reception 5 to 7 p.m., at 100 Market St. Portsmouth, and runs through January 13.

Given the gallery’s four floors of wall space, the show has always offered opportunity to numerous artists to connect directly with buyers and other interested galleries. The current show features 16 artists from three states, the majority with multiple works or sizable collections, allowing for a real insight into the artists’ styles, says Michael Simchik, gallery patron and owner of 100 Market.

“In a show with so many artists of individual and definitive visions it seemed important to offer viewers a real feel for the work,” says Simchik. “This isn’t the type of exhibition you can just pause a moment and move on. There are wonderful narratives, (expressionism and representational) and both in photography and painting, as well as outstanding abstract works. These works call for greater attention.”

Exhibiting artists include: Maddi Alana, Judith Andrews, Russell Aharonian, Martine L’Etoile, Marina Forbes, Gillian Fournier, Christopher R. Gowell, Kate Higley, John Rufo, Caroline Rufo, Meghan Howland, Jasmine Inglesmith, Aline Lotter, Bill Oakes, Christopher W. A. Potheir and Regina Valluzzi.

“I know we’ve said it before, but this is truly one of the most stunning shows hosted in the building,’ says Jean Hurlbut, Hurlbut, McLane Law Firm’s gallery liaison, a show supporter. “I don’t think there’s been a broader range of strong visions in a single show.”

Simchik sponsors the juried and curated Gallery at 100 Market for the purpose of advancing the individual artist’s business-of-one. There is no fee or percentage taken. Buyers are directed to the artists or representing galleries. Other galleries are encouraged to connect with exhibitors.

“This is surely a show to take your time with,” says Simchik. “I’d also recommend making it to the opening. If ever there was a show when viewers will want to talk to artists, this is it.”

Two artists from the Abstract Artist group are among the 10 finalists selected in the Strem Science and Art contest. The contest is sponsored by Strem Chemicals, based in Newburyport and is run by the Newburyport Art Association.

The contest is unusual for the exceptionally strong connection that is maintained between science and art throughout the process. Chemists from Strem are involved in the judging, along with arts professionals. With the standard set for science as well as art, is it a surprise that both abstract artists in the finalists have strong science backgrounds?

Barbara London was originally a pre-medicine major, studying Zoology before deciding to pursue art. Her work often involves organic forms with clear references to microscope images, organelles, and biological microstructures. Many artists work with organic forms, but Barbara’s Biology experience allows her to capture and abstract the relationships between biological forms and to hint at the instances where “form follows function”. You can see a few examples of her work on her profile page, here (with links to her website).

Dr. Regina Valluzzi is an accomplished Materials Scientist and Polymer Physicist. Many of her drawings and paintings contain subtle allusions to the forces and interactions important to her technical field (no nerdy pun intended). Sometimes clear references and depictions of structures and phenomena from her years of research also diffuse into her painting. Examples of Dr. Valluzzi’s work can also be found on the AAGNE site. Click for her profile page, here (with links to her website).

The other finalists reflect a wide range of artistic media and expression, promising an interesting contest and possible exhibition. The prize includes a cash award, and an image featured on the Strem catalogue and in their corporate marketing materials. Strem is well-known to chemists in the NorthEast and throughout the US for their incredibly precise and complex organometallic catalysts, as well as for other varieties of big sexy molecules.
